Tony,

Recently, I survived a very broad layoff in my company.  I’m left feeling vulnerable thinking I may not survive the next round when it comes.  What can I do to improve my odds of not getting laid off?

-Surviving in Seattle

Dear Surviving in Seattle,

The main principle to keep in mind is that job security lies in the individual and not the company.  The firm is designed to create value, and a lot goes into that, including hiring the right people.  But first and foremost, the company must survive.  So when market conditions ebb and flow from favorable to not so good, the company will make changes to survive, including job cuts.  The key is to position yourself in a favorable way a long time before this dreaded event ever comes about.

To put the odds in your favor, think about how you create value and make yourself more valuable to the firm.  Get involved in projects, take on new skills, volunteer in ways that improve your company, attend conferences to stay informed on relevant changes to your industry.  With the virtual world more developed than ever, the opportunities are endless.  Consider going back to school and taking advantage of tuition reimbursement if your firm offers it.

To take this a step further, think about ways to connect to others in your industry and your community.  Be valuable to all of humanity by getting involved in civic activities, chamber events, technology events, and other areas that interest you.  Be intentional about attending things in person when they are available, and when you are there be an active participant.  If you are so inclined, get involved in organizations that interest you.

Allow your curiosity to lead you to what types of events and activities there are, and in the process your network will grow.  Over time, you will lead a more fulfilling life by growing your skills, meeting new people, and creating more value than you ever thought possible.
